Top family-friendly destinations near Lisbon (within 1h30 by car)
Lisbon is a city that offers so much to families but sometimes a change of scenery is just what you need. Whether you're looking for scenic beaches, lush gardens or historical wonders, the areas surrounding Lisbon are perfect for a quick getaway that everyone in the family will enjoy.
Sintra with kids
Sintra is one of those places people tend to love… or feel a bit overwhelmed by. It really helps to know what to expect.
Whether you’re planning 1 to 3 nights or just a day trip, it’s worth remembering that Sintra is much more than Pena Palace. Pena is beautiful, of course, but there are others.
Also, be prepared for queues and waiting times, especially at the main sights. It’s normal in Sintra. Going early and not trying to do everything in one day makes the experience much nicer.
Transportation options:
- Private driver or tour: Comfort, flexibility and zero stress with navigation. You’re picked up directly at your accommodation, driven to Sintra and can stop wherever you wish. The driver stays available and is ready to pick you up whenever you need.
- Train: Accessible by train from Lisbon.
- Self-driving: Having a car is useful to get to Sintra, but once you’re there, it’s best not to use it. The streets are narrow, many are one-way only, parking is very limited and most monuments don’t have nearby parking. A good option is to park near A Volta do Duche and then use local buses or walk. It’s simpler and far less stressful.
Top attractions:
- Park and Palace of Monserrate
- Park and Palace of Pena
- The Moorish Castle
- Quinta da Regaleira
- Traditional pastries like travesseiros and queijadas

- If you wish to visit only the exteriors of the palace and the gardens of Pena Park (including walking paths, terraces and viewpoints), a ticket is still required but no specific time slot is needed. Tickets here.
- If you wish to visit the interiors of Pena Palace, a time slot is always required and there is no tolerance for delays. The visit to the palace interiors usually takes 20-60 minutes, depending on your interest. Tickers here.
- Strollers are not allowed inside Pena Palace (bring a carrier), but the staff will keep it for you.
